Why Elon Musk says he isn't losing sleep over Nvidia's new self-driving AI

Technology company Nvidia announced a new artificial intelligence system for self-driving cars. The announcement was made by CEO Jensen Huang at the CES conference in Las Vegas on Monday. According to the company, the new system, called Alpamayo, will first appear in certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the U.S. in early 2026.

Nvidia also shared plans to work with robotaxi companies. The goal is to use its technology in fleets of self-driving taxis as soon as 2027. The company stated its system uses cameras, AI, radar, and lidar to help cars drive themselves. This seems similar to Tesla’s approach, which relies mainly on cameras and AI.

Following the news, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared his thoughts on the social media platform X. He said he was not worried about the announcement. Musk wrote, "I'm not losing any sleep about this," and added, "I genuinely hope they succeed." He noted that getting a self-driving system to work most of the time is much easier than making it completely safe.

Musk explained that it could take several years for this to become a competitive pressure for Tesla. He suggested it might be five or six years, or possibly longer, before other car companies fully adopt the necessary technology. After the announcements, Tesla’s stock fell on Tuesday, according to market reports from that day.
