How the Music Began
Kizomba grew from a mix of styles. Before Kizomba, there was Semba. Semba is a fast and traditional Angolan dance. In the 1980s, a band called Kassav brought Zouk music to Africa. This music was slower and used more electronic sounds. Young people in Angola loved it.
Musicians started to slow down the speed of Semba. They wanted it to match the Zouk beat. This created a smooth and sensual sound. It forced dancers to move closer together and stay grounded.
A Dance for Peace

What Makes the Dance Unique?

The Embrace: This is a very close connection. Partners move their upper bodies as one unit.
Groundedness: Dancers keep their knees slightly bent. They push their weight into the floor. It is very different from ballroom dancing.
The Ginginha: This is a natural hip movement. It happens when you step. You should not force the movement.
Dissociation: This means moving your legs while your upper body stays still. It allows for complex steps without breaking the hug.
Kizomba vs Urban Kiz
Today, there are two main styles. Traditional Angolan Kizomba is circular and soft. It feels like a family party. Urban Kiz started in Europe. It is more technical and moves in straight lines. It uses more stops and keeps more space between partners.
